Skin care basics for teens

6 Simple Tips For Taking Care Of Your Teenage Skin

Posted by Jill Rossini on

Teenage skin is notorious for being problematic, I think we all know the frustration of an unsightly zit showing up in the middle of your face just before an important event like a prom or a date!

Taking care of your skin is important at any age, but particularly in your teenage years. It is widely known that taking care of your skin throughout your teens leads to lifelong healthier skin and helps to develop a healthier skincare routine as an adult.

Here are some of our favorite tips to help you establish a good skincare routine to better take care of your teenage skin:

1. AVOID FOUNDATION

Not only does foundation clog pores, but it is also too heavy for young skin. When you reach your late twenties or thirties, the foundation is great – but as a teenager, a tinted moisturizer gives enough coverage, and is gentle enough on your skin, to be used every day without damaging your skin.

2. DON’T RUB IN CONCEALER – PAT IT

Rubbing concealer is the ultimate beauty no-no. If you start rubbing in your concealer in your teens, the thin layer of skin under your eyes becomes stretched, and you’ll develop some unwelcome premature wrinkles.

3. DON’T OVERDO IT

You absolutely don’t need foundation, powder, concealer, mascara, eyeliner, blusher, bronzer etc. all on your face at one time. Let your skin breathe! A little-tinted moisturizer, some powder to reduce shine, and a small amount of mascara and lip gloss is plenty. Any more and your makeup will look caked-on, and clog your pores, causing breakouts.

4. WASH YOUR FACE EVERYDAY

I can’t emphasize enough how important it is to clean your face thoroughly every day, both before you apply your make-up and every night before bed. A good facial scrub should be alternated with a gentle cleanser to remove all the dirt from your pores and extract the dead skin that can irritate your skin. I recommend ExfoliKate by Kate Sommerville. No matter what scrub you choose, you want it to have a very fine texture. Never use apricot scrub, it is far too rough for your face and will cause tiny taring.

5. MOISTURIZE

Moisturizing will keep your skin soft and supple, and some also help to combat acne. You want to choose a light daily moisturizer. I really love the Sanita’s Oil Free Moisturizer. I is light enough for everyday use.

6. TREAT YOURSELF TO A FACE MASK

Every 2-4 weeks, apply a deep cleansing face mask.  Masks work hard to remove toxins, clear your pores and remove any excess dirt from your face. There are loads of choose from, especially fresh mixtures available at the LUSH store! Go check ‘em out.
